Val Williams-Gray
I am a retired North Wales Police Officer, now working as an Operations Trainer. My role includes design and delivery of courses for Personal Safety, Taser, Police Support Unit (PSU) and First Aid training.
During my police service I undertook several roles including general operational policing duties, Child Protection, Youth Offending, Corporate work (Best Value Reviews), Training (Law, Personal Training, Personal Safety and Taser), joint working with Conwy County Council in Licensing and Rape Investigation (Amethyst).
I retired having completed my 30 years’ service in March 2017, and then returned to the organisation in December 2017 as a Trainer. My current role is primarily Taser training, though I am also a member of the National Working Group for Personal Safety Training, working alongside the College of Policing.
During the last 12 months I have had the pleasure of working with Harry Piper and Paloma Mari-Beffa. Harry has been a regular face on our Taser training sessions where he has been able to observe our Officers and their reactions to threatening situations. Officers often receive ‘bad press’ regarding how they deal with situations but there is a need to highlight the fact that when faced with a stressful situation natural human reactions occur. We hope to be able to use some of the findings of his PhD research to assist us with our documentation and justification for the Use of Force.
